Hermes, one of the most refined and renowned fashion brands in the world. Where did it all begin?

For most, the Hermes logo of a duc carriage with horse is quite confusing, it has no relation to handbags or luxury goods? The simple explanation is that Hermes began as a harness workshop, on the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris in 1837. Dedicated to serving French noblemen with Europe’s finest wrought harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade. Thierry Hermes was the founder who later passed it on to his son Charles-Emile Hermes who moved the shop to where it is today in Paris. Here he began with introducing sadllery and bags specially designed for riders to carry.

It was not until the 1920s that a clothing collection was born. It’s very first piece was a zippered golfing jacket for the Prince of Wales. In 1922, Charles-Emile Hermes son Emile-Maurice’s wife complained to him that she couldn’t find a suitable bag to her liking. Of course like any prince charming, he designed a handbag collection himself, introducing Hermes first leather handbag.

However it was only in 1929, almost a decade after opening did Hermes produce a women’s couture apparel collection. With this collection they established a presence in the United States and started to open more stores.

One of the most influential decades for the brand was in the 1930s when their most recognized pieces were created including the Sac à dépêches now known as the ‘Kelly bag’ named after the beautiful and talented Grace Kelly. It was here that Hermes took inspiration from paintings, books and all aspects of the arts. This is when the more creative pieces were introduced to the brand such as the beloved scarf collection.

Today, Hermes logo is one of the most recognized and desired images in the world. Starting as a harnessing workshop, 176 years later it is one of the world’s most beloved brands specializing in leather, lifestyle accessories, perfumery, luxury goods, and ready to wear. I think it’s time you owned a piece of their history. Here are our pre-loved picks….
